Supermarket giant Asda is planning to invest £1.3m in 112 electric home delivery vans and charging points at stores across the UK.

The new vans will more than double the retailer’s electric grocery home shopping fleet to 194 vehicles, as it continues to invest in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. From September, 21 Asda stores will operate a fully electric home delivery van fleet, expected to make over one million deliveries in the upcoming year.

The incoming eLCVs, comprising Ford and Maxus vans with a range of up to 130 miles, will also help to save 1,700kg of CO2 emissions per year. Emma Newton, senior director – ecommerce last mile for Asda, said: “We’re always looking at how we can better serve our customers and for new ways to reduce our carbon emissions, so we’re delighted to be more than doubling our electric fleet.”

Last year saw the supermarket giant invest in two new bio-LNG (liquefied natural gas) refuelling facilities as it continues to make progress towards reducing overall carbon emissions.
