The Royal Mail has deployed its 8,000th electric vehicle (EV), eight years after its first zero-emission vans joined delivery offices across the UK. The latest fully electric van will join 48 others already in use at Nottingham North delivery office.

The delivery fleet’s electrification journey began in December 2017, when it purchased its first 100 EVs and deployed them in delivery offices across the UK. Now, almost a quarter of Royal Mail’s delivery offices use EVs for deliveries and collections, with almost all of the company’s electric vans charged on-site via a purchased 100% renewable electricity supply and all are zero-emission at the tailpipe.

Stuart Murphy, Royal Mail’s head of fleet transformation, said: “Reaching 8,000 electric vehicles is a proud moment for Royal Mail. This achievement reflects our commitment to reducing emissions and delivering an even more sustainable postal service in every community across the UK.”

Royal Mail has just rolled out its first fleet of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) in an effort to cut its carbon emissions by replacing diesel-powered 42-tonne trucks with the zero-emission alternatives.

The fleet of eight fully electric HGVs will be deployed at its Midlands and north-west parcel hubs, handling ‘middle-mile’ deliveries between parcel hubs and mail centres.
