Keighley-based Byworth Boiler Hire has turned to Volvo for the supply of its first-ever brand-new truck – an FH 540 6x2 tag axle tractor unit. The vehicle arrives as a replacement for an equivalent asset in the customer’s five-strong fleet, which was previously supplied by a competing manufacturer.

John Thornton, transport supervisor, Byworth Boiler Hire, said: “We chose Volvo Trucks because of its reputation for reliability and long-term value. In this business, we can’t afford unexpected downtime and Volvo’s track record gave us confidence that we were investing in a vehicle that is built to last.”

The new FH is powered by a D13K Euro-6 compliant Step E engine, which produces 540hp and a maximum 2,600Nm of torque. This is paired with a 12-speed I-Shift transmission which delivers a smooth drive with perfectly timed gear changes by constantly evaluating information about speed, weight, road grade and torque demand.

Numerous comfort-boosting extras are onboard, including leather upholstery, dual armrests on both the driver and passenger seats and fully electronic air-conditioning with a carbon filter and sun, mist, air quality sensors.

Visibility is increased thanks to rain-sensing windscreen wipers, electrically heated and operated rear view mirrors and static cornering headlamps.

The inclusion of a tag axle in the specification was important for Byworth, given the benefits it provides in terms of manoeuvrability, reduced tyre wear and improved fuel efficiency.
