AA reveals barriers before mass EV adoption

There is ‘some way to go’ before mass electric vehicle (EV) adoption becomes a reality, according to a new ‘readiness index’ from the AA.

The index assesses eight factors influencing drivers’ readiness to switch to EVs. They are: cost of new EV, cost of used EV, cost of EV insurance, cost of home charging and a home charger, cost of public charging, access to charging, EVs running out of charge and roadside EV repair rates

The current readiness rating stands at 47.5 out of 100, indicating that while EVs are a viable and attractive option for some, significant barriers remain for mass adoption.

“Drivers tell us they’re excited about going electric and they love the tech, but they’re also confused and cautious,” said AA president, Edmund King. “Our Index shows that upfront costs and charging access are still major concerns. Our polling also suggests battery health and resale values are still issues for some.

“Our index is an independent barometer of the issues that are either holding drivers back or propelling drivers to go electric. It is neither pro nor anti-EV.”

To support the transition, the AA is calling for consideration of targeted incentives on used EVs, consideration of reduced VAT for on-street charging, faster planning and better signing of charging infrastructure and more factual information campaigns and reporting

Just 5% of respondents to the poll of 14,915 drivers say that the electric car grant is making them consider an EV, while more than a third (38%) say even with the grant, it is too expensive to buy a new electric vehicle.

A quarter (24%) said they will never buy an EV and one in five (20%) say they only buy used vehicles, so the grant does not help.
