SCREWFIX ADDS ELECTRIC HGVs TO LOGISTICS FLEET

This milestone is part of the company’s continued commitment to reducing carbon emissions as it aims to reach net zero for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040. The electric HGVs boast an impressive range of 200 miles per charge, depending on driving style, road conditions, and weather. Each truck can complete a route with up to five deliveries before requiring a recharge, aligning with the current operational efficiency of Screwfix’s existing fleet. The vehicles will be used twice within a 24-hour period, ensuring optimal productivity.

To support the deployment of these electric HGVs, Screwfix has installed dedicated charging stations at its Lichfield Distribution Centre (DC). The electricity used for charging is sourced from renewable energy, including power generated from the DC’s large solar panel installation, further reinforcing Screwfix’s commitment to sustainability.

The electric trucks will operate on shorter-range routes from the Lichfield DC, servicing Screwfix stores across the West Midlands and Midlands regions. These new vehicles will deliver to Birmingham, ensuring zero-emission deliveries in one of the UK’s major cities.

The electric HGVs will work alongside Screwfix's current fleet, of which 85% is powered by HVO - a renewable fuel made from waste products. Together, these green logistics solutions are set to dramatically reduce the company’s reliance on traditional fossil fuels, cutting CO₂ emissions while maintaining efficient delivery services to its network of more than 900 stores.

Screwfix has halved its direct carbon emissions (Scope 1 and 2) since 2021, transitioning 85% of its delivery fleet to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and replacing fossil fuel heating in over 639 stores with air source heat pumps. They aim to further reduce these emissions within two years while addressing Scope 3 emissions.
